So what is Washed Out exactly? Well, its the work of one man, Ernest Greene. Apparently it can be classified as ‘chillwave’ which really in anyone’s mind, doesn’t sound too appealing unless your permanently living in your own Point Break surfing scene.
Bit upon future research, ‘chillwave’ refers to the dreamy, hazy somewhat nostalgic sound that includes the stylings of Toro Y Moi & Deerhunter.
At first, I couldn’t help but draw comparisons to Moby circa The Beach soundtrack. And I don’t mean this in a degrading sense – the first track, ‘Eyes Be Closed’ certainly has a musical throwback feel to it whilst creating a sense of distance & isolation of a deserted landscape.
Stick with me, I going somewhere with this, promise.
There are certainly upbeat moments, ‘Amor Fati’, ‘Before’ & my fav, ‘Soft’. With gentle electronic harmonies glimmering with delicate soundbytes & gentle percussions.
What I’m trying to say is the album at times feels as personal & intimate as it’s front cover. Almost telling the tale of a pair of lovers; smittenness, attachment, adventure, isolation from the world and sometimes, an eventual isolation of each other.
This one will probably fly under a lot of radars this year-but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
